Trauma & PTSD

Trauma is a term to describe any experience that is deeply distressing and psychologically affects an individual. PTSD is the response that follows the disturbing incident or exposure, and curbs an individual’s ability to cope or function in everyday life contexts.

What are its signs?

Trauma characteristically follows a severely impacting event that leaves certain emotional marks in its wake. While it is often simply interchanged with shock, there is quite a bit more to it. Below are some symptoms that can help identify the signs of trauma and PTSD:

  • Denial regarding the traumatic event; this manifests in avoidance of talk regarding the particular incident or aggressive retaliation at its mention.

  • Frequent emotional outbursts that appear uncalled for.

  • A desire to remain isolated, and push significant others away from oneself.

  • Evident symptoms of anxiety, both physical and psychological, accompanied by or as a consequence to a severely distressing incident.

  • A sense of disorientation, detachment, and non-responsiveness.

How can we help?

Adjusting back to the normality of life after sustaining a trauma is easier said than done. While it can often feel like no one understands the your feelings about the event and the feelings you feel after the traumatic event has passed, approaching a mental health professional is a secure and brave step in overcoming the unbearable feelings trauma leaves behind.

Therapy modalities:

The effects of trauma can manifest in a number of ways; for instance, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is one of the most common outcomes of severe traumatic incidents. Hence, therapy modules that address the victim’s perception and response to the trauma have been known to be highly effective.
